According to my TimeHop, which has yet to let me down, today is the 20th anniversary of Men In Black (the good one). And while I love Will Smith just as much as the next guy (and if we're all being honest with each other, probably more) - there is one Tommy Lee Jones line that remains in my top 10 movie quotes.
"Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."
I think its so very important to remember that what you KNOW, in another famous MIB quote, means precisely dick.
I am not trying to discredit science or argue with mountains of evidence against any prominent current scientific theory. But I will remind everyone that science is made of of facts and theories. And even things that you can undeniably prove now (coughcough melting ice caps coughcough) , were just theory once upon a time. And the best any honest scientist can say about a theory is 'With the tools and knowledge we have right now, this is the explanation that makes the most sense.
There's a very similar scene in Friends, where Phoebe argues science to Ross that illustrates the same point. The specific scene is from 2:43 - 3:45 in this video, but I enjoy most scenes where free spirited Pheobe explains something to scientist Ross.
I say all this to implore every one to LISTEN to each other.
To not be so 'unbelievably arrogant' that you can't admit when you're wrong or when you don't know something. Or even that what you accept as fact is really just a theory. Recognize that you come from a different place, went to different schools, lived in different neighborhoods, read different news sources, have different Netflix queues. And I'm very tired of people underestimating me because I'd rather watch Buffy than the news.
David Boreanaz is so much hotter than your news guy anyway.
And that's a fact.
