My father and brother in law were in town for the Fourth of July. They are both big baseball fans, so we usually go check out a game when they're here. We chose a small town local team game on the fourth that had fireworks afterwards.... because you know... fourth. But after waiting and waiting after the last pitch and subsequent WIN for the home team we were told that the fireworks would be in 30 - 45 minutes.
We were tired. The boys had been working hard in the garage all day building .... things. And I had been teaching non stop, including a three-fer the day before. It was late and dark. And as unpatriotic as it seemed at the time, we left. Before the magic happened.
On the way out of the parking lot, we noted the HUGE line of cars that were entering the stadium. Hundreds of people filing in to watch the show. It was, in fact, backed up not only to the highway, but people were camped out in every single parking lot from the stadium to the highway - and the sides of the road and at every gas station pump as well. We congratulated ourselves on having the foresight to leave early as it would have taken HOURS to get back home if we had tried to leave when everyone else did.
But the BEST part about it was that we didn't actually miss the fireworks. We saw them from every town on the way home. We were listening to fun old school rock and everyone was singing along. We didn't hear the loud bangs of the fireworks - but we saw them popping up along the road. It was like a game. Every body was eagerly awaiting the next flash of color. And we saw the finale burst of at least three towns instead of the one we would have seen if we had stayed at the ball park. All of us agreed that watching the fireworks that way was much more special than just sitting at the stadium.
I guess the 'moral' of the story is to trust your instincts. Although it seemed wrong to leave the ball field before the fireworks we had come to see, it was a much better decision to leave. It not only made us happier that we got home a a decent hour, got a good nights sleep. But know we have the memory of a very special fireworks show that was put on just for us.
